PawaPay secures Payment Service Provider licence in Mozambique

October 8, 2026

PawaPay has secured a Payment Service Provider (PSP) licence from the Bank of Mozambique through its local subsidiary, Quidexplus Mozambique, marking an important step in our operations in the country.

As one of the first companies licensed to operate as a PSP in Mozambique, we can now onboard merchants directly and provide regulated payment services, connecting businesses to the mobile money services their customers use every day.

Mobile money payments in Mozambique

Mozambique has more than 12 million active mobile money accounts across three operators: M-Pesa (Vodacom), E-Mola (Movitel) and mKesh (Tmcel).

“Mozambique has been one of the most active mobile money markets on the continent for years, but merchants have had no reliable way to operate here at scale,” said Ilídio Matchebe, Mozambique Country Director at PawaPay.

“Becoming one of the first PSPs licensed by the Bank of Mozambique changes that. We can now onboard merchants directly and connect them to the operators their customers already use day to day.”

PawaPay across Africa

PawaPay operates across 23 African markets, processing around 7 million transactions a day for customers in sectors including ride-hailing, remittance, retail and NGOs.

Founded in 2020, PawaPay has now successfully processed more than 3.5 billion transactions.
